The castle consists of a round tower keep on top of the motte, a pentagonal inner bailey with an outer bailey 46mbeyond it and a large eastern bailey beyond the modern road, enclosed by a high rampart perhaps of Roman origin.
The ground slopes away from the motte on all sides except the North. The Western half of the enclosure is divided roughly into 2 parts, of which the N formed the inner bailey and to the South the outer bailey.
